The Jackal is an elusive assassin who makes a living playing hitmen for the highest paycheck. He soon meets his match in the form of a tough British intelligence officer who tracks him down on a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase across Europe. In The Day of the Jackal (1973), the Jackal also drives a white Alfa Romeo, although it’s an older model. The Graham Norton Show reference: Denzel Washington/Paul Mescal/Saoirse Ronan/Eddie Redmayne/Blossom (2024). TLDR: Redmayne pulls it off. Lynch is poorly cast. Unfortunately, the leads are not level, which detracts from an otherwise impressive and quality production. Lynch doesn’t cast a shadow, it’s just the high bar that Redmayne has set. A seasoned actor could make a more believable counterpart/antagonist needed to challenge the Jackal. Overall, the story is a viable adaptation. The character development works, even if some things are left open in the main characters’ narrative, but that’s something to be desired. The locations, the varied interactions, and Redmayne’s delivery of language and character switching really add a special layer to the story. The barometer of deception is always on in the background. I’m looking forward to seeing how Se01 ends and how the quality of Se02 is maintained or improved. Hopefully Lynch will be less pressured and give a more nuanced performance to try to match Redmayne. If he does, Se02 could be quite promising.
